I live a half mile from the Peconic River and about at the middle of it's length. The River runs east to west and splits Long Island into the north and south forks. The rivers on Long Island are not really rivers but small streams or brooks that most have been dammed in spots by early settlers, forming shallow ponds.
A new modern dam was just constructed for this part of the river. It is right before the river flows under Edwards Avenue through three long concrete tubes or culverts.
Since canoes are permitted on this part of the river access around the dam was installed.
Coming down river canoes land here. Then are carried to a shoot on the other side of the dam where they continue their journey under the four land road.
