According to a tradition that has come from ancient times, martenita brings health, happiness and longevity. The old Bulgarians believed that there was some evil power in nature, called "badness," which also awakened in the spring, and in popular beliefs March 1 marks the beginning of the spring. Martenitsa were attributed to the magical power of protecting themselves from "bad", mostly from illnesses and whammy. You can remove it only when you see the first stork and hanging on a blooming or green tree.

The legend of the martenitsa is related to Khan Asparuh and the year of creation of the Bulgarian state (681). According to one of these stories, when the Proto-Bulgarians reached the Danube Plain, they were enchanted by the place and decided to settle here. Following the proclamation of the newly-founded state, the khan wanted to make a sacrifice to God Tangra. The sacrificial spade was traditionally to be lit with a sprig of dried dill, but the Bulgarians found no such thing. As he wondered what to do, a falcon landed on Khan Asparuh's shoulder. He dipped a bundle of dill tied with a white thread half dyed red. It was sent by Khan Asparukh's sister, Huba, who stayed in the palaces of their father Kubrat. Huba was dreaming of a dream she knew about her brother's troubles. By her falcon she sent him a bunch of dill, tied with a white woolen thread. During the long flight, however, the falcon's wing was wrung and the white thread colored the blood. Thus Khan Asparuh received the wrist, tied with a white-red thread. He fired the fire according to tradition, and the thread hung for health. Since then Bulgarians hang their loved ones with a tied white-red thread.

Some of the traditions on 1March, related to the eviction of evil forces include burning fire and incinerating the dirt of the yard and then all jumping over the coals. The divine custom of choosing a day is also spread. From March 1 to March 22 everybody thinks about a certain day of this period and judges what the year will be - if it is sunny, it will be successful if it rains and the weather is bad - there will be difficulties.

Happy Baba Marta all. To hang ourselves and our friends with martenitsa - to get rid of bad things and just good things to accompany us. Wanting health, longevity and luck.
