Although I’m not a fan of make-up (neither cosmetic nor artistic), on Halloween night I decided to dress up as a horror character and go to work like that, just to amuse the customers for a while and also to face up, to some extent, to one of my fears: that of being on display in a way that might make me look ridiculous.

It all started when my colleague suggested we dress up as witches on Saturday 31 October, and although I didn’t have a costume or anything, I took the risk of doing something different – all the more so because I don’t even celebrate this day – but as I’ve been looking for ways to step out of my comfort zone lately, this seemed like a fun way to start.

At first, I thought about just putting on an afro wig, which I find funny, but when I looked in the mirror, it didn’t seem at all spooky or in keeping with the Halloween theme, so I ruled that out and then thought of something that wouldn’t look like me.

The initial idea was to paint on a beard with black tempera paint, but when I checked my drawer, it turned out I didn’t have that colour, and that’s when I started improvising, looking for ideas I could pull off with the limited ‘make-up’ supplies I had.

When I saw the Saw character amongst the options MetaIA suggested, I knew it would be the one, as it’s relatively simple to do and, since I’ve no make-up skills, it suited me perfectly as my first (and perhaps only) experience of cosplay.

With less than an hour to get ready, I used a white eyeshadow as a base and applied it with a sponge to cover my entire face; the rest was just lipstick and eyeliner. But the most important thing was the attitude.

I turned up for work looking serious, with my eyes fixed on a neutral point and a completely expressionless face. In the end, I got the result I wanted, as customers would look at me and smile, or feign fear when I stared at them.

Some asked to have their photo taken with me, so I grabbed the knife I use to cut hard cheeses to make myself look even more terrifying. However, there was one person I couldn’t quite convince, and it was just as I got home, when my little cat waited for me to sit down to take off my shoes, before climbing onto my lap to purr whilst I stroked her.

At the end of the day, I thought that although I don’t celebrate this festival – I didn’t go trick-or-treating or play any tricks – it was a fun way to relieve the work-related tension that comes with special occasions when sales are high and stress levels double.

…Or perhaps there’s also the theory that my dark side came to the surface that day… muhahahaha
