I may have mentioned to you before one of my favorite places in the city: A&B Caf茅. I love it because it's a place where you can go for a coffee or tea with a snack, or enjoy a delicious meal while browsing your favorite books. And they have a huge selection in their library, so every time I have the chance to go, I pick up right where I left off. This time, I decided to start reading Talkien, a great friend of C.S. Lewis, whom I already knew from The Chronicles of Narnia. Both of them were also a big influence on my favorite author, J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter). My choice was The Silmarillion.
En otras oportunidades yo quiz谩 les coment茅 a ustedes acerca de uno de mis lugares favoritos en la ciudad, se trata de A&B Caf茅, me encanta porque es un lugar al que puedes ir a tomar un caf茅, o un t茅 con una merienda, o disfrutar de una rica comida mientras disfrutar de tus libros favoritos, y vaya que hay un gran repertorio en la biblioteca para elegir, as铆 que cada vez que tengo la oportunidad de ir, yo contin煤o con mi lectura justo donde la dej茅. En esta ocasi贸n decid铆 empezar a leer a Talkien, gran amigo de C.S Lewis, a qui茅n yo ya conoc铆a por Las Cr贸nicas de Narnia, y a su vez ambos fueron una gran influencia para mi escritora favorita, J.K Rowling (Harry Potter). Mi elecci贸n fue El Silmarillion.
The Silmarillion isn't a novel per se, but rather a collection of epic tales in the style of the Iliad or any similar Greek work. These legends serve to explain the origin of Middle-earth, the elves, men, dwarves, and even the origin of evil. The work is divided into five parts, and the first reminded me a great deal of Narnia because at the beginning we see how Eru Il煤vatar creates the universe and the world, which Tolkien calls "Arda," through a beautiful divine melody, while Melkor introduces discord as the origin of evil. In Narnia, the world originates through a song by Aslan, while the White Witch intended to sow discord and evil to corrupt this new world.
El Simarillion no es como tal una novela sino un conjunto de historias 茅picas al mejor estilo de la Iliada o cualquier obra griega de este tipo, estas leyendas sirven para explicar el origen de La Tierra Media, los elfos, los hombres, los enanos e incluso el origen del mal. La obra est谩 dividida en cinco partes y la primera me record贸 much铆simo a Narnia porque al inicio vemos como Eru Il煤vatar crea el universo y de del mundo, a qui茅n Tolkien llama "Arda" a trav茅s de una bella melod铆a divina, mientras Melkor introduce la discordia como origen del mal. En Narnia el mundo se origina a trav茅s de una canci贸n de Aslan, mientras que la bruja blanca pretend铆a sembrar la discordia y la maldad para corromper ese mundo nuevo.
Melkor, as the origin of evil, becomes the first Dark Lord, Morgoth, who later steals the three sacred jewels, the Silmarils, which F毛anor had created using the light of the two Trees of Valinor. Not content with this, Morgoth also destroys the trees. Outraged, the Noldor elves pursue him to Middle-earth, causing havoc along the way. Finally, we witness the forging of Sauron's rings (and it is here that the story connects with "The Lord of the Rings").
Melkor, como origen del mal, se convierte en el primer se帽or oscuro, Morgoth, qui茅n m谩s tarde roba las tres joyas sagradas "los Silmarils " que F毛anor hab铆a creado usando la luz de los dos 脕rboles de Valinor, y no conforme con esto Morgoth adem谩s destruye los 谩rboles. Indignados, los elfos Noldor lo persiguen hasta la tierra Media pero causan estragos en el camino. Finalmente vemos la forja de los anillos de Sauron (y es aqu铆 donde la historia se enlaza con "El Se帽or de los Anillos")
The book has a very interesting and complete narrative structure; it is certainly the perfect prelude to telling a new story (The Lord of the Rings Saga, which I haven't read yet). Its characters have emotions as complex as we all have in real life, and despite being a fantasy story, it is narrated with such a serious tone that it makes it realistic. In fact, it has a touch... I don't know how to say it... such a solemn tone that it seems biblical, so in that sense it also reminds me of Narnia, but at the same time the style also reminds me of the adventures of Odysseus in the Iliad.
El libro tiene una estructura narrativa muy interesante y completa, ciertamente es la antesala perfecta para contar una nueva historia (La Saga de el Se帽or de los Anillos, la cu谩l a煤n no he le铆do) sus personajes tienen emociones tan complejas como las tenemos todos en la vida real, y a pesar de ser una historia de fantas铆a est谩 narrada con matiz tan serio que la vuelve realista, de hecho tiene un toque... no s茅 como decirlo... un tono tan solemne que parece b铆blico, as铆 que en eso tambi茅n me recuerda a Narnia, pero al mismo tiempo el estilo tambi茅n me recuerda a las aventuras de Odiseo en la Iliada.
As such, the epicenter of it all is the eternal struggle between good and evil. There's a great deal of influence from various mythologies, such as Celtic and Norse, but there's also a strong Christian influence, and here again, the comparison with the works of C.S. Lewis is inevitable (I know I might be boring you by saying the same thing over and over, but it's the truth). The thing is, both authors had deep Christian roots, and through their works, they sought to "evangelize," or rather, to help their readers understand, in a more dynamic way, that whole divine world that we normally see as "unattainable." By using mythology, they somehow made it more dynamic or "attractive," so to speak. Look, I could be wrong, but this is my perception.
Como tal el epicentro de todo es la eterna lucha entre el bien y el mal. Hay much铆sima influencia de varias mitolog铆as como la celta y la n贸rdica, pero tambi茅n hay mucha influencia cristiana, y en esto es inevitable nuevamente la comparaci贸n con las obras de C.S Lewis, (s茅 que quiz谩 los tengo aburridos diciendo lo mismo a cada instante, pero es la verdad) lo que sucede es que ambos autores ten铆an profundas ra铆ces cristianas y a trav茅s de sus obras buscaban de alguna manera "evangelizar" o mejor dicho, hacer que sus lectores entendieran de una manera m谩s din谩mica, todo ese mundo divino que normalmente vemos como "inalcanzable" usando la mitolog铆a de alguna manera lo volvieron m谩s din谩mico o "atractivo" por llamarlo de alguna manera. A ver, puedo estar equivocada, pero esta es mi percepci贸n.
However, unlike Narnia, it's not a book I would recommend for children, as the large number of place names and entire lineages of creatures and beings can make reading the work quite challenging for them. I think it's a bit complex, not as much as, for example, One Hundred Years of Solitude, but I do believe it has so much information that it could prove to be a challenging read for children.
Sin embargo a diferencia de Narnia no es una lectura que yo recomiende para ni帽os, ya que la gran cantidad de nombres de lugares y linajes completos de criaturas y seres, puede hacer que leer la obra sea todo un reto para ellos, pienso que es un poco complejo, no tanto como lo es por ejemplo Cien A帽os de Soledad pero s铆 considero que tiene tanta informaci贸n que podr铆a llegar a resultar en una lectura desafiante para ni帽os.
For me, it was an exquisite read. I was so captivated that I plan to buy the book, and not only that one but also the Lord of the Rings saga. Fortunately, this place not only has a library where you can access any books you want while paying for your meal at the caf茅 or restaurant, but it also functions as a bookstore with a financing plan 馃 馃槂 A dream come true. Para mi fue una lectura exquisita, me qued茅 tan fascinada que pienso comprar el libro, y no solo ese sino tambi茅n la saga de El Se帽or de los Anillos, afortunadamente ese lugar no solo cuenta con biblioteca donde puedes tener acceso a los libros que desees mientras pagues los servicios de la cafeter铆a o restaurante, sino que tambi茅n funciona como librer铆a con sistema de financiamiento 馃 馃槂 todo un sue帽o.
