The processor is one of the most important elements of any computer, but it is also one of the most fragile and although it does not seem like it, they also need minimal care if we want to keep them in good condition and to hold as much time as possible running smoothly.

Therefore, in this special article we will review the most important keys for the care of a processor, although we will talk about them from a slightly more original approach, treating them as things that we should not do, since they will facilitate understanding, and we will also accompany the information about the possible consequences that may occur.

Before entering the subject we want to make an important clarification, and that is contrary to what many users believe the passage of time does not affect by itself the performance of the processor, that is, does not reduce its speed or capacity of work.

This supposes, in short, that a Core i5 4690K processor purchased two years ago will perform the same as a new one, always from the point of view of the passage of time, that is, without taking into account other factors that can influence.

All right, let's start

1-Use the processor continuously at high temperatures

The heat is one of the big enemies of any component that we have installed in our PC, but it affects especially certain components, such as the processor and the GPU, which can cause damage that can be slight, serious and very serious.

Among the minor damages we can mention for example partial impairments that imply a need to increase the voltage to maintain certain working frequencies or a lower overclock capacity, while the serious ones imply effective losses of performance and the very serious ones a break total, that is, it stops working.

We may believe that using a processor during certain specific periods at high temperatures does not have to have consequences, since in any case it will lower its frequency or it will turn off to avoid damage, but the reality is that by doing that we will be playing Russian roulette.

If we have for example periods of good temperatures in winter but live in areas with very intense summers and the processor suffers in excess we must improve its refrigeration, even if only necessary at that time of year.

And what temperature would be normal? To give you an idea the Intel Haswell processors should be between 20 and 30 degrees at rest, between 40 and 60 degrees in load and not have peaks over 70 degrees with maximum load. If we enter the 80 degrees we should start to worry.

2-Force too much overclock levels

It is normal that when we get an unlocked multiplier processor we want to try to maximize it, but we must always be very careful not to use working frequencies that suppose a considerable increase in voltage.

We must also relate it to the previous point and monitor the working temperatures of the processor at maximum load with the level of overclock that we have set, since it is possible to show reasonable figures at rest and load but shoot at full load with exaggerated peaks and not let's realize.

The ideal is to always stay below the stable maximum for air and control the fringes in which we move, something we can understand better with the following example. When I started uploading my Core i5 4690K I decided to leave it at 4.1 GHz instead of going for the 4.5 GHz because it implied a voltage increase and it put me in peaks of more than 70 degrees.

The frequency difference is noticeable but in real performance I do not notice anything and the processor remains at maximum of 1.083V and 53 degrees with the four cores at maximum load.

Obviously if we are not careful we can end up damaging the processor and even leave it unused, with all that that entails.

3-Never change the thermal paste

It may seem silly but it is not, in fact it is along with cleaning one of the elements that has the greatest impact on the degradation of performance that a processor can suffer over time, although it is reversible whenever we act on time.

The thermal paste helps to dissipate the heat by accelerating the conduction of it and makes contact between the IHS (integrated thermal diffuser) of the processor and the heatsink block, from which the heat pipes to the fins of aluminum in block on which settle one or two fans, at least in the majority of the systems of dissipation by air of the market.

Over time this is losing properties which means that our dissipation system will have less and less capacity to deal with our CPU and temperatures will increase to points that may end up being unsustainable, especially when dust accumulates in the heatsink .

It is advisable to change the thermal paste once a year and not wait more than two years to do it.

4-Use it with inadequate dissipation systems

It is an error that unfortunately is very common and that nevertheless can have very serious consequences. The most common is the excess of temperatures, since many users buy CPU with an unlocked multiplier and plan to overclock using the reference heat sink.

Another error that has also been seen on several occasions is to use dissipation solutions that have not confirmed full or secure compatibility. This can end up having unpredictable consequences, from the premature death of the processor due to excess heat by not making a good contact with the IHS until physical damages in the CPU.

We already saw it at the time with the latest generation of Intel processors, which eventually doubled when they were used in conjunction with certain dissipation systems due to the excessive pressure exerted by them.

Make sure your processor will run smoothly with the dissipation you plan to implement.

5-Clean it with inappropriate materials and without due care

When we open a device to clean the dust and change the thermal paste we must be very careful when removing the dissipation system and the processor, but also when cleaning it and re-"puncturing" it.

It is best to hold it by the sides firmly so that it can not escape, and gently scratch the thermal paste of the IHS gently, using for example an old toothbrush or even a plastic card that no longer serve.
