Hello dear steemians today I am going to share with you a very interesting subject. let's discover it
Reading is a complex cognitive process performed by the brain at a phenomenal speed. However, if you are a reader X, know that despite this speed already high in the absolute, you are incredibly slow compared to the speed that you could reach with a little training.
Increase your reading speed IMMEDIATELY
Like everyone else, you have mostly stopped learning to read towards the end of primary school, as if it were a perfect achievement and no more progress was possible in the field. But know that you have just learned to decipher the letters, to understand the meaning of words. Then, it is the habit of reading that allowed you to read relatively quickly, and no longer decipher the words with your finger as primary. Be aware however that as for all practice, reading also a (huge) room for improvement is still available to you: this is the interest of speed reading.
If you do not believe me, copy and paste the text below in the box provided here:http://zapreader.com/ Then, just below this frame, set the speed of the scrolling words to 600 words / minute (twice the average reading speed). Take a deep breath, relax, and click on "reading". You will see that you will have understood everything at the end (maybe not the numbers, but everything else though).
Reading mainly mobilizes sight, and two different memories: visual memory and semantic memory. Schematically, during your reading, here is what happens: your eye sees the words, sends the images of these words to the brain that will compare these images to what it already knows (visual memory) before giving them a meaning (memory semantics), which allows you to understand the sentence quickly (unless it's a sentence from Stephen Hawking). You already guess, if it is less obvious to play in the very short term on the speed of operation of memory, it is therefore on your ability to recognize the words that we will, here, be able to play. Imagine that you can read even twice as fast as before: considering the volume of information you read every day for work (newspapers, reports printed PowerPoint, websites, books, blogs ...), doubling your reading speed is either halve your time of hard readings to double the volume of information processed in the same amount of time. And we are talking here only a factor 2. Because your reading speed can indeed be multiplied by 3 or 4 with a little practice. John F. Kennedy could, according to legend, read at more than 1200 words / minute - the formal proof has never been made, but such a reading speed is a priori not humanly impossible. For comparison, an average reader is around 200/300 words per minute. This means that each line, your eyes "stops" on average between 6 to 10 times on the words, unconsciously (just as the perpetual motion of your eyes, at very high frequency, is perfectly imperceptible).
For example, in the sentence below, here are in bold the words on which the eyes of an average reader will stop during the reading:
The old professor of the University had defended a thesis on the contribution of Bavarian Romanticism to the textile industry in New Zealand .
What you need to achieve with a bit of training is to be able to read and understand the same sentence by stopping only in bold words below:
The old professor of the Universityhad defended a thesis on the contribution of
Bavarian Romanticism to the textile industry in New Zealand.
When reading this sentence, you limit your "stops" to the 4 bold words above, your eyes follow "in a straight line" the phrase of a bold word to another bold word, making less of " breaks, and therefore less jerks. Why ? Everything happens as if an invisible thread, passing through the words that are not bold, guided your eyes between each word in bold. And your peripheral vision, guided by this invisible thread, goes into action to decipher the intermediate words, which you then read "per packet", as illustrated below:
- The old - professor- of the University had-defended- a thesis on - the contribution - of the Bavarian romanticism to the - textile industry - New Zealand.
Is not your reading more fluid like this, and frankly faster? Be careful, it is not a question of flying over texts without understanding them. Fast reading will allow you to read as effectively as normal playback; your new reading speed will simply become your normal speed. How is it possible ? Simply by making a greater use, as we have just seen, to your peripheral vision, which you did not learn to apply to primary school to learn to read. By reading as usual, everything happens as if your eyes were bothering to clearly discern each word. It is a commendable effort, but unnecessary ... because you do not use the ability of your peripheral vision to recognize forms. It's a bit like seeing the world by closing an eye: you are depriving yourself of information. If I take the example above, the idea is to sweep the phrase by "aiming" for one word out of three or four, not reading word for word.
Tim Ferriss's method to double your reading speed in 10 minutes
For 2 minutes, practice reading by following each line of the finger, or with a pen. The "visual guide" that you have created will prevent your eye from going back and making too many jerks.
For 3 minutes, read each line starting with the 3rd word from the beginning and ending with the 3rd word before the end. As you get there, try to focus your attention directly on the middle of the line.
For 2 minutes, and once you're comfortable with the previous practice, try reading sentences by making only two bindings per line.
During the last 3 minutes of your express training, read a few pages at random by forcing yourself to practice these techniques, even if you do not understand for the moment everything. It will get your eyes and your brain used to a new speed of reading, which you will quickly learn to master later.
At the same time, these site offer a comprehension test, which is essential for fast reading: it is not a question of reading without understanding. To check, therefore, if you could read quickly and well, these sites offer to answer a few questions about the content of what you just read. You will see that it is not so easy to read fast while getting 100% comprehension / memorization, but again, or you decide to spend 80% of the time reading texts that you will only use 20%, or you decide to spend 20% of the time reading texts that you will use, this time, 80%, because your quick reading has allowed you to sort effectively between the good and the bad grain.
Speed reading on Ipad
If you have an iPad and you're really interested in reading fast, a very well-done application can help you progress through fun exercises: "Acceleread". Its advantage is to be less austere than the others, and to propose different small exercises playful and well made, according to your level. And since you only have to unlock the iPad screen to use it, a short subway or bus ride is enough to do an exercise.
The price is not exorbitant ($ 7.99), however, only invest in this application if you have done the trick of the aforementioned techniques, you already read very quickly and you would like to progress further to aim for the championships In addition, the application, at the time these lines are written, exists only in English. In itself, it is not dramatic, but you will never be faster than your native language: your eyes recognize the forms of words in a thousandth of a second, it will take a little more time for another language.
