Monday musings...
Today I am going to be launching a new content series from myself called Monday musings, - They will be covering all sorts of topics that randomly pop into my head. Some may be deep topics, some may be considered more as "shower thoughts" but its my way of getting my thoughts onto paper so to speak.
Todays topic is Now vs 2500 years ago
I think every age throughout history has its hardships, for us we the current pandemic with the possibility of new global pandemics on the horizon - We have massive over population of the planet and have the brink of global war always a possibility.
So how were things back 2500 years ago? Well They obviously had a completely different set of hardships to contend with. Famine was a very real problem, without Imports a bad years crop could make or break a areas year and be the direct cause of many deaths, like wise with illness - unlike today with modern medicine the most simple things could kill you back 2500 years ago - in fact the average life expectancy was just 30 years old back then...I am 37, now that's a sobering thought!
It wasn't all bad though!
One nice thing I feel about back 2500 years ago is how you could go and stake your claim on a piece of land and it would be yours to own - should you be capable of defending it from anyone else that wanted that land. at 37 years old my biggest concern in life is trying to save some money so one day I might have a small modest home to grow old in and not have to pay rend to a land baron. This was not a concern back then.
What was a concern was marauding groups looking to pillage and plunder other settlements, this was a very real problem and very common - there was a lot of cattle stealing prevalent and so this lead to the eventually banding together of peoples to form communities, here you could have some protection and be part of a bigger group.
Here is the remnants of one such settlement I live close too!
I thought it would be interesting to share a photo of one of these iron age settlements, this is a large hill fort, it is a series of deeply dug trenches with a large area at the top - the top would have been surrounded by sharpened trees set into the ground to form a formidable barrier - if you managed to make it over the many mounds but the time you got to the top you would be in no fit state to put up a strong fight.
Final thoughts
In some strange ways I think living 2500 years ago would have been a much simpler life, but one of equal hardships and in general much worse - as appealing as it is to be able to go and claim a stake of land and be able to build a home holding onto that home would have been a constant battle for survival, and its unlikely I would be alive even now back then.
Yeah I think I prefer to stay in the now!
