Everybody is concerned, mad, excited, down or crazy or anything in between since that Bitcoin Cash hardfork in August. Many people messed around with their portfolios, including me, to try to max out on potential opportunities.

Just some thoughts and lessons learnt I would put together here.

  1. Bitcoin is king and will stay so. There are now institutional investors flowing in and the price for Bitcoin will certainly go higher and higher, we can take that almost as given. In which intervals or timelines, including dips that will happen, we don't know.

  2. If Bitcoin flies, all Altcoins do suffer. If Bitcoin dips, all Altcoins will gain. It's a weird thing, that contradicts what we saw in the past. Bitcoin went up and was even outperformed by other coins like ETH. I don't know if this pattern will return after all that fork craziness, we have to see, but that's what I bet on.

  3. Given these 2 extreme gain/loss scenarios, one should hedge against it. Meaning split your portfolio into Bitcoin and Altcoins. One gains, one loses, you stay safe. In the mid to long term both will appreciate

  4. Take a small percentage, let's say 10% only, not more, to play with new coins, shitcoins, scamcoins, wondercoins, safe the world coins, communist coins, evil coins, my favorite are POS coins. Anything goes, but keep it at 10% max.

  5. Last but not least, try to keep the majority of your investments in your own wallet in your own environment. Can be a paper wallet for the paranoid, a hardware wallet for the not so paranoid, an encrypted virtual machine, that stays most of the time offline, or just that wallet on your everyday laptop. I have the latter 2, depending on what I do with the coins. High value coins are stored away safely
