Kefalonia Island in Greece - we liked everything here: the beauty of the island, the cleanest sea, the weather, hospitable people, service, hotels, delicious food.
Kefalonia airport is quite small. Passport and customs control we passed quickly. The second thing that surprised me right away was the serpentine roads of the island - they looked breathtaking from the heights.
Mountains, sea, pines, cypresses, olive trees and not a single factory!
It is highly desirable to rent a car - the island is really big! Most of the beaches (small, but very beautiful) can only be accessed from the water; there are different options for how to do this - from groups to individual ones or renting a small motor boat.
People are friendly, landscapes are unreal. The water is like another planet!!! Another nuance - since the island is large, there are no crowds anywhere. Everywhere there are places on the beaches, in cafes, there are no queues and traffic jams.
And on the island, you can find grazing goats almost everywhere. They are domestic, but they climb mountains like mountain goats. Therefore, you need to drive carefully - the goats consider themselves the owners of the island.
We started exploring the island from the famous Melissani lake. This is the Drogarati cave lake. The locals thought that a dragon lived in the cave for 10 million years, that's why it was named Drogarati. The cave was created by nature itself - all its beauty was created by an earthquake.
It's very dark when you enter the cave, but... later you find yourself in paradise with emerald clear water. The deepest place is about 30 meters, and you can still see the bottom of it - so clear the water is. Everything sparkles and shines there, and if you look up, you can see the sky. It's just heaven! Our tour was conducted by a guide. People get into the boats, and the guide talks about this amazing place.
We also visited Antisamos beach. On the way to it, a stunning view of the sea opens up. There are white pebbles on the beach, sun loungers for vacationers, and the sea has clear and warm water. But the beach is especially beautiful from the observation deck... simply magical! It's great to watch the sunset on the beach! The sun sets very beautifully, illuminating the sea and pebbles - everything glares in its warm rays.
I really liked the capital of the island, the city of Argostoli. We got to the capital of the island by a small ferry - it took about 30 minutes. There you can just walk and take pictures at every step. In the city center, on Litostroto Street, there are various shops with colorful shop windows. There we bought souvenirs to remember the island. At the end of the street is the main theater of the island, "Kefalo".
With pleasure, we walked along the embankment and looked at the loggerhead turtles. Turtles swim up to the very shore. Since, here every morning, the fishermen clean the fish, and the remains are thrown into the water, and turtles eat all of this. They are not afraid of people at all. Of course, we couldn't leave without tasting Mediterranean Ionian seafood at the local cafe.
Also, we had a visit to the monastery of St. Gerasim. There is also an underground cave where the saint spent 5 years of his life in prayer. After the holy place, we visited a winery. The tasting of Kefalonia wines took place in a cheerful, relaxed atmosphere, all tourists noticeably cheered up.
Myrtos beach made the most unforgettable impression on me. It is chic - not in vain and it is considered one of the best in Europe. You can get there by car. There is white sand and small pebbles, and the water is unrealistically blue. True, entry into the sea is difficult - very large stones. But it's worth it.
One more beautiful place - a very picturesque area of Kefalonia - Asos. The bay is so colorful that it remains in memory for a long time. At will, there was an opportunity to climb to the fortress of Asos. Of course, we took advantage of it. Rising kmto it, picturesque paintings opened.
The area itself in Kefalonia is hilly, and it is very beautiful! Everything is beautiful here; houses, roads, the air, nature. An original island, untouched by the influx of tourists. The reason is that earthquakes periodically occur in it, and it is risky to invest in the construction of hotels. Therefore, on the island in all its glory, you can see its real life and culture.
There are very few people on the streets and cars on the roads. Driving is a pleasure. Separately, I recommend a trip to the mountains with a reserve in the south of the island, an absolutely deserted place where the road runs through huge pine trees, and a stunning view opens up at the top.
In general, you must definitely go around the whole island, all the main beaches, they are amazing, but to do this you need to come for at least two weeks: one week to rent a villa in the southern part (it just takes 7 days to travel to a new place every day along a new route), then move along the mountain serpentine to the northern part, and there be sure to visit Asos, Fiskardo, Myrtos beach.
I also recommend renting a boat in Fiskardo for 4 hours, and rafting to the nearby wild bays with the clearest water, and to the nearby islands. They are very beautiful.
The nights in Kefalonia were especially romantic and warm. A lot of lights were burning and reflected in the surface of the water, beautiful houses and yachts, warm weather and a fresh summer breeze.
Kefalonia is a piece of summer, a piece of heaven on earth! If possible, be sure to visit it - the impressions will go off scale! There are many places where you can have a very cool and, most importantly, memorable rest for yourself!
With love, @Luana.
