Hello everyone in this beautiful community. I hope you are doing very well.

Today I want to share with you some events that have taken place in my city, Holguín, Cuba. These are facts that fill me with deep sadness, helplessness, and quite honestly, make me feel ashamed of the behavior of some human beings.

I am writing this post in commemoration of World Animal Day, which was celebrated this past October 4th—a date that invites us to reflect on our impact on the lives of vulnerable beings.

El cruel incidente de la perrita callejera / The cruel incident of the stray dog

As it turns out, on an intensely rainy day, a small stray dog walked onto the porch of a house to take shelter from the storm. The homeowner, upon seeing her, made an incomprehensible decision: instead of letting the rain pass or simply shooing her away, she boiled water and poured it directly onto the little animal.

Fortunately, a neighbor witnessed the act and immediately reported it to the relevant authorities. The dog was rescued and, despite severe burns, managed to survive. A financial fine was imposed on the abuser.

How much hatred and malice can someone harbor in their heart to dare to do something like that to an innocent creature?

I believe that the laws against animal abuse remain very weak in my country. In the face of acts of extreme cruelty like this, more severe sentences should be imposed, including years in prison. Only then would people think twice before committing such atrocities.

Another extremely painful scenario is the one experienced by horses used for public transportation in our cities. Due to the complex transportation situation in Cuba, "coches" (carriages pulled by horses and driven by a driver) have become an indispensable alternative.

The problem lies in the fact that most of these drivers do not provide them with the care or rest they deserve:

  • Overwork: They force them to carry between 8 and 12 people per trip.
  • Extreme exposure: They work under the relentless sun or heavy rain, from very early in the morning until dark.
  • Poor diet: From what I have heard, they only receive food at the beginning and at the end of the workday.
  • Physical abuse: They are whipped to keep walking when they no longer have the strength to continue.

On one occasion, I witnessed one of these horses collapse in the middle of a public street. The vast majority show visible scars, and others even have open wounds that have not healed.

Hacia dónde debemos ir: Un llamado a la empatía / Where we must go: A call for empathy

It is true that, compared to previous years, we have made progress in Cuba with the approval of animal welfare decrees. However, we still have a very long way to go. We need more rigorous laws and authorities who enforce them firmly.

But above all, people lack love, empathy, and humanity for these beings who share the planet with us and only offer us affection and loyalty.

These are just two examples of the sad reality that thousands of animals live worldwide. Change begins in our hands. Please do not harm any of them, no matter how small they are.

If you see a stray animal and do not have the possibility to adopt it, you can help in other ways:

  • Offer it some food or water (it might be the only thing they consume that day).
  • Let it rest for a while on your porch to shelter from the sun or rain.

Every life matters, and it is our duty to protect them.
