I try to strike a balance between the fantastical and the plausible.

The breakdown of our system is already underway. There's plenty of doom in that, and lots more bad stuff to come. I try to acknowledge this without fixating on it. Part of my hope with this story is to highlight the doom while describing perspectives that overcome it in some way.
