It is by now well known that the national security state has become hopelessly entangled with both news media and social media in the US. There's a revolving door between intelligence agencies and Big Tech, with private companies routinely engaging in state censorship and propaganda. This partnership has eliminated many of of our freedoms, creating a state of virtual martial law online. I recently ran across an excellent but very long article on the subject titled 'A Guide to Understanding the Hoax of the Century.' Here's some of what it said:
The crime is the information war itself ... By conflating the anti-establishment politics of domestic populists with acts of war by foreign enemies, it justified turning weapons of war against Americans citizens. It turned the public arenas where social and political life take place into surveillance traps and targets for mass psychological operations. The crime is the routine violation of Americans’ rights by unelected officials who secretly control what individuals can think and say. ... A state organized on the principle that it exists to protect the sovereign rights of individuals, is being replaced by a digital leviathan that wields power through opaque algorithms and the manipulation of digital swarms. It resembles the Chinese system of social credit and one-party state control, and yet that, too, misses the distinctively American and providential character of the control system. ... The false yet foundational claim that Russia hacked the 2016 election provided a justification—just like the claims about weapons of mass destruction that triggered the Iraq War—to plunge America into a wartime state of exception. With the normal rules of constitutional democracy suspended, a coterie of party operatives and security officials then installed a vast, largely invisible new architecture of social control on the backend of the internet’s biggest platforms.
On August 26, an article appeared on CNN titled 'Newly declassified US intel claims Russia is laundering propaganda through unwitting Westerners.' This is just one of many pieces pushing the discredited narrative that Russia is behind any perspective that challenges the official story about international events. These kinds of articles are increasingly being used to rationalize censoring dissenting views. This one specifically sets the stage for dismissing all critics of our regime as unwitting Russian mouthpieces.
On the covid front, the New York Times recently published an article that called the statement "Covid-19 vaccines do not prevent transmission of the disease" a debunked claim. And the CDC's recent assertion that cloth masks don't protect against wildfire smoke is yet another tacit admission that masks were always an ineffective pandemic measure, since covid is much smaller than smoke particulates.

On these and other issues, the new media environment that's developing appears designed to place as many people as possible into a false parallel reality. The problem isn't merely the lies. It's how the lies fit together to establish a new paradigm that furthers the control regime's agenda. And it's not just the stupid and the gullible who have been sucked into this new paradigm. Millions upon millions of otherwise sensible people have completely invested themselves in this false reality.
Not only do these people parrot control regime propaganda, they customize the propaganda for their particular social circumstances. Here in Minneapolis, that often means embellishing the propaganda with the language of care. Like the store down the street from me that will be requiring masks indefinitely because they want to 'protect the vulnerable.' This propaganda customization makes it easier for these dupes to internalize the control regime messaging and make it their own. It is, in effect, a way for the dupes to emotionally participate in the control regime.
For a long time, I gave these people a pass in my thinking. I'd tell myself that they were merely fearful and clinging to the regime's directives to try to regain a sense of safety in uncertain times. But we now know that lockdowns were a disaster that contributed to the civil unrest of 2020 and had no public health benefit. We know that masks and distancing didn't stop the spread of the virus. We know that the vaccines were wildly ineffective and made many people sick.
We also know that pandemic policies facilitated a massive consolidation of wealth and power, coinciding with the installation of unprecedented censorship and propaganda mechanisms throughout the media landscape. On one level, those who've bought into the regime's messaging are victims of an epic con. But they're also responsible for how they respond to this messaging. And at this point, I can no longer just shrug off their lies or excuse their ignorance.
Their false reality has become a danger to us all. It tramples basic human rights, threatening to eliminate these rights entirely in an increasing variety of circumstances. There are a frightening number of true believers in the false reality, but I'd like to think that a larger segment of our population is simply doing its best to conform. Hopefully more of these conformists come to their senses before it's too late.
