In the parking lot behind the coffee shop, wind blows dust and trash around, sometimes producing persistent a little tornado. At the center of this tornado is empty space. But its center is also a strange attractor. A point around which the world organizes.
Strange attractors are everywhere. In the physical world, we see them acting upon the elements at every turn. Or seeming to act upon these elements. The center of a tornado doesn't control the winds swirling around it. Instead, it holds uncanny stillness.
Throughout the economy, strange attractors are evident in market activity. And in the social realm, they're at the center of every trend. Whether in a mathematical or conceptual sense, they're points that energy naturally organizes around. I try to pay attention to these points.
In crypto, it can be profitable to identify places at the center of organizing energy. But doing this successfully is a boring full time job. The strange attractors that most concern me are those in the middle of good drama. Places that give rise to storms. People with their own gravitational pull.
While public events are largely driven by the considered actions of the powerful, they can also take on a life of their own. Both the covid response and the more recent push to get to the bottom of why that response was so terrible fall into this category. The policy dimension of these situations is less interesting to me than their social dimensions.
All over the country, people are revisiting the covid response and realizing that it was totally fishy. When these people dig deeper, they're finding a catastrophe brought about in part by the military-intelligence machine. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is fast becoming a strange attractor in this space. There's lots of energy organizing around his presidential candidacy.
As a writer, I try to look at not only where the energy is, but where it will be in the future. Most of the social issues we're programmed by media to pay attention to strike me as irrelevant sideshows that must be continually injected with outrage to keep people talking about them. Conversations on race and gender and partisan politics lost their center long ago.
There are a few places where I see cultural strange attractors on the horizon. Three of the biggest that I've blogged about before involve emerging tech, UFO disclosure, and the psychedelic renaissance. I also see signs that more energy is beginning to organize around alt media and new narratives about societal systems in general. Maybe this is just wishful thinking, but that's part of where I see us headed.
