I just published a new Substack newsletter titled 'Below the Surface.' The piece combines stuff from this blog with original material. It gets into the recent Kennedy campaign incident and the emerging covid vaccine injury horror show. It also touches on how crime appears to be changing and the migration crisis in the US.
There are apparently 2 million people crossing the southern border into the US each year. This figure is shocking. Migrants from all over the world are fleeing their home countries and settling in cities across the US with sometimes disastrous results. The organized crime gangs facilitating this mass migration are getting rich by perpetrating human rights abuses.
Predictably, the law and order crowd thinks that the problem can be solved by increased law and order. They want closed and heavily policed borders. Many favor treating migration itself as a criminal act. Stop illegal immigration they say, but I feel like the problem is much bigger than that.
There are many despotic regimes in the world. Big swaths of the planet are unlivable for political, economic, and ecological reasons. The US government is directly responsible for some of these conditions in Latin America and elsewhere. European governments are also responsible for engineering such impossible situations.
If a nation's leadership is tyrannical, people should be able to escape the tyranny by going somewhere else. If the tyranny of the US government appears more acceptable to people than the tyranny of their home country, it makes sense for them to immigrate here. And when the immigration process proves too slow, it makes sense that they would come here by extralegal means.
I don't think such people should be treated as criminals for seeking more acceptable living conditions. Nor do I think that public funds should be used to subsidize their lives in any way unless they're on a path to legit citizenship. And when undocumented immigrants commit violent crimes, I think they should be deported and treated as terrorists by security forces should they ever reenter the country.
If the world was reasonable, there would be no national borders. People would be free to move across the face of the Earth as nature intended. If despots ruined one country, its citizens could just leave and go somewhere better. Anything short of this is not quite freedom.
Protectionists object to freedom of movement on the grounds that immigration makes good places into bad places. And mass migration does inevitably cause problems for the target nation. But closing borders doesn't really solve problems. It merely externalizes them, displacing their impacts. Surely there's a better way to deal with people who flee their home countries for better lives elsewhere.
