Today I sent out the first edition of Free Mind Gazette, my new substack newsletter. Titled Doing Good in a Bad Machine, the piece introduces me and gives readers an idea of what to expect if they subscribe. Don't worry, I'm not switching to substack or anything. My plan is to use the platform for longer articles on some of the topics I've covered extensively here on this Hive blog. I'll probably start with one piece a month, then move to twice a month or even weekly after I activate subscription payments.
We're launching a major upgrade of WantToKnow.info this weekend. Coinciding with this, here are our new socials: Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram. I still hold the keys to 
The WantToKnow.info upgrade is very exciting. It marks the beginning of a new era for a site I've been contributing to for almost nine years. 
Coinciding with this, I've now tested my TF-IDF vector cosine similarity scheme and found that it does indeed produce relevant news article recommendations based on news article text content. My next step here is to create a demo so others can test the recommendations further. Putting this scheme into production might be tricky, as there are data cleaning steps that could be hard to automate, but it would be pretty cool to end up with a solid article recommendation widget.
These things have been taking up most of my time lately. I haven't even blogged every day. But I feel good about all of the hours I've been putting in. My work has purpose. It's challenging, but not impossible. And it's motivated me to bring my skills up to date.
The news lately has been boring. More sordid yet unsurprising Epstein details have come to light. There's been progress on hacking the genetic code. Something about a submarine. And have you heard about Russia?
I did recently watch Jordan Peterson interview presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. I used to actively dislike Peterson but now I feel like he's just another opinionated talk show host. This was my first look at Ramaswamy, and he struck me as very genuine. Genuine, but not presidential in the slightest.
According to unnamed CBS tourism experts, 500,000 people are coming to Minneapolis this weekend. I doubt this estimate, as it would mean that the city will more than double in size as a consequence of Pride and a large concert. I'm having a hard time picturing that. Hopefully my neighborhood remains navigable even if downtown is mobbed.
