According to central bank president Mario Draghi, the ECB is targeting the dangers of digital currency.
Bank supervision is working to identify risks, Draghi said Monday in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Banks from the EU, however, have little interest in digital currencies, which have recently been exposed to enormous fluctuations.
Cyber currencies should be considered a very risky asset, Draghi added. They are unregulated and their prices are highly speculative. Banks should therefore measure the risk involved in exposures.
The ECB has been responsible for the supervision of the major banks in the euro area since autumn 2014.
