Koi fish pond is commonly found across homes in Asia. This fish pond often adorns the house especially when it’s located inside and nearby the living room. However, does it really add any value? Does it have any value beyond decoration? That’s something I wanted to discuss in today’s post.
In recent years, koi have become more popular. I have met some koi breeders and they told me that during the pandemic, it seems people are getting interested in having koi inside their home. One of the koi breeders that I know is my landlord. He told me that in his simple ponds, he has koi worths of millions of Indonesian rupiah. He said that unless you know about koi, you wouldn’t know that fishes cost an arm and leg. That is why he is very casual about putting the fish pond just outside his patio where I normally receive my grab orders.
Did you know that Koi signifies friendship and love? Moreover, some Indonesians believe that koi bring fortune into the house because they are friends with the goldfish. I think that’s quite intriguing which may be the reason why some people who are into the koi niche are breeding the kois and adorn their house with a koi pond.
In terms of home decor, during the 20th century, koi pond is also a choice for the affluent chinese to adorn their garden. Similarly, koi fish pond in Indonesia is also often found at middle to upper class homes. I recently went to a guest house that has a beautiful mid-sized koi pond. The guest house itself doesn’t really have any theme but rather attempts to bring out tranquility and comfort into their space. It is shown by decorating the surrounding with the Buddha picture, some palm trees and most importantly a beautiful koi pond.
What I experienced is supported by an article that I read which mentioned that, in one’s property, a koi pond can improve the flow of positive energy and serenity. In that same blog, it also lays out some other spiritual significance of koi fish. Though it is a poor supporting evidence, I have not found any research that talks about koi and its spiritual meaning.
The koi pond that I’ve seen in my life differs. Some people build a minimalist koi pond that only costs around 200$ whilst some can spend billions on it. The koi pond that I saw at the guest house recently, would cost, I estimated to be around 1000$.
The surrounding of the pond is decorated with pebbles to create a walking path. The pond itself is black with the water fountain that provides a water pump and water filtering system for the pond. The shape itself is pretty simple, a rectangular shape with three rectangular water fountains. From the distance, the pool seems like it’s a painting. The water was pristine and the koi fish were still swimming and the color was very vivid. They all look well-managed and fed.
The pond can be seen even through the 3rd floor. I think it is good that the pond has proper lighting.
With the touch of the pond, this guest house lobby does not seem dull at all. It adds a bit of interesting touch to the lobby that makes everyone curious about that particular spot. There are two rooms that have a direct view of the pool. They both are the most expensive rooms in that place.
Does the koi pond add value beyond decoration? It depends on the person who owns the property. For those who believe in feng shui and buddhism, the koi pond signifies more than just a pond. But for those who don't believe that, it may as well be just a decoration. And whether that adds more value in the property and adorn the place, it certainly is. The koi pond is a beautiful touch to any property. It can be used to adorn any lobby, garden, and even indoor living room.
