" Sleeping is for broke people", that's what I listened in a random podcast yesterday. But is it really?
This topic seems to create divided answer between the science and the hustle culture. They both share polar opposite opinion. Physicians advocate to sleep 7-8 hours a day while entrepreneurs endorse sleeping less.
" When you sleep, you are behind because the other part is already awake", that is another line I listened from that random podcast. But how effective is actually sleeping less? According to a paper titled Need for Sleep: The Impact of a Night of Sleep Deprivation on Novice Developers' performance, American economy is losing approximately 63 billions due the lack of sleep of it workforce. Even with this estimation, young people who enter into the workforce and/or hustle culture are still going to meet with sleep less and work more motto. But, thanks to publication of digestible books such as Why We Sleepby the neuroscientist and sleep researcher, Matthew Walker which puts a light on the importance of sleep. That book seems to garner attention which then endorses by influencer that made people aware of how sleeping less is damaging.
I was also sold to the idea of sleeping less to make more money when I was 20-21. Two years later when I started taking interest in Neurology and Neuropharmacology, I learned more about the importance of sleep and realized how my time management was poor that I have to sacrifice my sleep. On top of that, I was never a person who cares about day and time.
As three years ago, in response to a question by "What would you do if you never had to worry about time?" In that reply, I mentioned;
Now, I am still holding on to that idea yet more refined with life hacks to maximize productivity without sacrificing sleep.
I started to think in terms of, I have 24 hours to spend.
This idea was again emphasized after I was exposed to Norway's summer midnight which totally look like morning. But personally, I do not want to turn a blind eye to the idea of circadian rhythms which also influential to our body functioning and health. However, there are also argument that people have different chronotype which explains why some sleep earlier, some sleep later.
As for sleep, I sleep 7-8 hours whenever I want to, whether it is 3 AM to 10 AM or 10 PM 6 AM.
Sleep remains non-negotiable. Then, I will have about 16 hours to spend. If you lean towards hustle culture and self-improvement, there is enough time to do everything. Workout? read a book? learn a new language? code? work? netflix and chill? you got it.
So are you broke? I think there's oversimplification between sleeping and being broke. What I notice personally, when I am broke is mostly because I don't manage my time well and doing more useless tasks than I should.
