I live in Khobar, Saudi Arabia. I have been an expat for 8 years.
Last night at 3:03 AM, I was coming back from my night duty through the empty road near Half Moon Bay.
My phone rang. It was my mother from Bangladesh. She calls me every day at this time.
She asked me only one question: "Baba, did you eat?"
I said, "Yes, Ma." I lied. I didn't eat anything since lunch.
She immediately said, "Don't lie to me. I can tell from your voice."
I stopped my bike on the side of that empty desert road and I cried. No one saw me.
Expat life is not about money. It's about lying to your mother that you ate, and your mother catching that lie from 5000 km away.
This is my true story. If you are an expat in Khobar, Dammam, or anywhere in Saudi, you know this feeling.
Do your mothers do the same?
