I want to share a small series of orchid photographs. I stayed very close to the flower and focused on its details rather than the whole plant.
The orchid has a very interesting face. The pink and white petals are covered with thin lines that spread from the center toward the edges. They look almost like small drawings on the petals. The yellow and red details in the middle make the flower even more colorful. When I look at these close-up images, I notice something different each time. Also as you may see as well in the last images, it looks like a pigeon to me :) It is trying to protect the nest.
In the first photograph, there are unopened buds on its own. Against the dark background, the small green bud becomes the main subject. It has a very simple shape, but there are already many small details visible on its surface. I found this one interesting because it is very different from the open flower.
The second image shows the side of the orchid with a few buds and part of the open flower. The shapes of the stems and buds create a small group around the main flower. It feels more natural and less controlled than the close-up photographs.
The third image is probably one of my favorite views from this series. Several buds are hanging from the stem, and one small part of the pink flower is visible between them. The flowers are not completely open, so there is a feeling of something still happening.
Next, the flower is fully open and facing the camera. Beside it, there are still unopened buds. I like this combination because the flower and the buds show two different moments at the same time. One is already open, while the others are still waiting.
Fifth image gets much closer to the center of the orchid. The lines on the petals become much stronger here. Pink, white, yellow and a little orange come together in a very small area. The center almost feels like another flower inside the flower.
After these different views, I positioned my self in front of the orchid. The last two photographs are very similar with slightly different angles, but I still wanted to keep both. The symmetry of the flower caught my attention. The two sides almost mirror each other, while the center breaks this balance with its yellow and orange details.
I spent some time photographing this one flower from different distances and directions. There was actually not much happening around it, it was just sitting over the bench, but the closer I looked, the more details I found.
I have never looked so close to an orchid flower before. Taking into account the very limited time it offers to view the blossom, I feel very lucky to witness this miracle.
