You must have heard that life is a journey. Even though that's just one amongst many ways to describe life, It makes a lot of sense, and the analysis of life as a journey, makes even more sense. Basically, when someone sets out on a journey, he or she usually has a destination in mind, if there is no destination, then it isn't a journey.
Life, being the journey that it is, requires us to know where we're going, who we're going with, and what we're taking along with us, on the journey. If any of the requirements above are not met, there's a really slim chance of getting far.
On the journey, that life is, it's easy to lose your way. Choices, which are inescapable, sometimes leave us at crossroads, and in doing so, undermine the effort made to get where we want to. If you happen to lose your way, it is imperative that you know where you're coming from.
If you do not know where you come from, then you don't know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, then you don't know where you're going. And if you don't know where you're going, you're probably going wrong.
- Terry Pratchett.

It is said that, If you want to get somewhere fast, you should go alone, but if you want to get far, you should go along with someone. As true as this is, picking the right companion on a journey, plays a major role in you reaching your destination, because the said companion will either be your stimulant or your deterrent. Having a companion might be a necessity, but if no one believes in your destination, that should not stop you from going on that journey.
If there is no one to hold your hand, put it in your pocket and continue your walk.

No one goes on a run with a backpack full of items, its weight will only make it a herculean task. When making preparations for a journey, your destination determines what you take along with you. What good would it do you, to take along a box full of clothes, if you're going mountain climbing? How far would you get? Knowing what things to leave behind and what to take along, on a journey, is also instrumental to you getting to your destination. For example, taking along a bad attitude, on a journey to become a Human Resources Manager.
A bad attitude is like a flat tyre, you can't get far, until you change it.

With all the right moves, any destination can be reached. A compass could be said to be something that helps a person make choices about what is right, effective, etc. I hope that this serves as that.
