Upon entering the boarding area for my flight (Laoag City) back to Manila. I found this gallery of the “Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan” or the National Living Treasures Award is the utmost honor given by the government to traditional folk artists. It was institutionalized in 1992 through Republic Act (RA) No. 7355 or the “Manlilikha ng Bayan Act” to highlight the importance of Philippine traditional arts and folk crafts by recognizing exemplary artists dedicated to these art form.
Goal: To encourage the crafts’ continued production and sustain the use of native methods and indigenous materials, as well as nurture unique skills.

It was mandates of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the state’s highest policy-making and coordinating body for culture and the Arts, to administer and implement the awards.
The NCCA, supports the programs that ensure the transfer of the artist’s skills and undertakes measures to promote a genuine appreciation for those works of art and instil pride among our people for the genius of the Manlilika ng Bayan.
Goal: To encourage the crafts’ continued production and sustain the use of native methods and indigenous materials, as well as nurture unique skills.
