Hello Liketu, on May 2nd I will be running the Vitality 10k to raise money & AWARENESS for The Eve Appeal Charity.
This charity is extremely close to my hearts.
I ran for The Eve Appeal over 6 years ago when my best friend found out that she carries the BRCA 1 mutation. Through all of the awareness she raised, I was inspired to take the genetic test… and 6 years later I run again for the same charity BUT this time with the knowledge that myself and my and sister carry the BRCA 1 mutation. From taking the test, we are able to take the preventative route and reduce the risk of cancer to lower than the national average.
We can take control back over our bodies.
The Eve Appeal is the only national charity raising awareness and funds specifically for the prevention and early detection of the five gynaecological cancers that affect mothers, sisters, wives, daughters & friends. Including ovarian and cervical cancer. They fund ground-breaking research focused on developing effective methods of risk prediction, earlier detection, and developing screening.

What is the BRCA mutation?
Everyone has BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. They are known as tumour suppressor genes as they play a role in protecting us from cancer. They do this by helping to prevent the cells in our bodies from growing and dividing out of control. If there is a significant alteration in either of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, they may lose the ability to protect us from a cancer developing.
The risk of women with the BRCA 1 mutation to develop the specific cancer in their lifetime is increased to 81% for breast cancer and 68% for ovarian. By having the knowledge and taking the preventive route their risk goes down the lower then the national average!
Did you know the BRCA mutation can be inherited through men as well as women
Did you know men with the BRCA mutation also increase their risk of developing breast and pancreas cancer
Did you know around 1 in every 200-300 people in the general population will have a BRCA gene alteration. In some populations, they are more frequent, people of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, for example, have around a 1 in 40 chance of carrying a BRCA gene alteration.
Why this charity is so important:
Ovarian cancer is hard to detect early more than 75% of affected women are diagnosed at an advanced stage because the early-stage disease is usually asymptomatic.
Funding is so important for the eve appeal as their research aims to improve the prevention, risk prediction, and early detection so that we can stop these cancers before they start.
P - R - E- V- E- N - T - I - O - N
The vision is simple.
A future where gynaecological cancers are a disease of the past
A future where fewer women develop and more women survive gynaecological cancers
A future where women can predict, prevent and detect earlier
So please dig deep to help me not only raise money but raise awareness of the importance of genetic testing and talking about the signs, symptoms and screening of these cancers.

LET'S SPREAD AWARENESS BECAUSE KNOWLEDGE REALLY IS POWER!
