How would you define an 'Active User'?
To calculate the "active" users, I have included any transaction that has been made by an account. This can be a post, upvote, downvote, transfer, sbd conversion, power up, power down or even the creation of the steem account itself.
Here are my numbers for the last 30 days (June 20 - July 20):
All active accounts (including account_create): 105,889
All active accounts (excluding account_create): 80,141
Active curators: 68,614
Active authors: 53,510
Active curators and authors: 75,436
To my surprise it seems there are a lot of accounts created that are not being used thereafter. Strange... I don't know why. Anyway, as of today, I won't count these accounts as 'Active' anymore.
All data is coming directly from the Steem blockchain and is based on UTC time.
