Delayed gratification on the one hand, broken promises on the other. Why is it never jam today?
The idea of having to work for something, having to put aside the pleasure of the moment in order to make something that will feed us for a while, is one of the roots of us being human, being conscious of time. It's in one of the oldest stories we have (and although we have an idea of when the Judaeo-Christian Bible was put together as a collection of books, we have no idea how old the actual stories are in there). The story of Cain and Abel hinges on the quality of sacrifice each was making, it is God's rejection of Cain's sacrifice that leads to him killing his brother. Cain tills the soil and Abel is a shepherd and God's punishment for Cain's fratricide is to wander the earth - all around the different ways of thriving available to pre-historic man, plant growers, livestock farmers and nomads. Anyway, the point is, the better the sacrifice you make, the better your life will be.
"jam tomorrow" is a Latin pun - the word for "now" is nunc in the present tense, but if you're talking future or past, the word is "iam" or jam, so as the White Queen says to Alice "The rule is, jam to-morrow and jam yesterday – but never jam to-day." which is a nice satire on the way that aristocracy can twist words to make an agreement that really only works for them.
All of which is a long way round me saying that I've turned my autovoter off for 24 hours to help my Voting Power recover. It's currently at about 35% and especially with SBD being high, I'd like to be able to give some higher rewards. I'll be around and keeping an eye out for the good stuff, but only manual voting for today.
