Today, here in the Cape, we are having our first real wintery day with thunder and rain - so not the weather to be out and about in.
On days like this, I like to go through my packets of veggie seeds and to start a type of calendar as to what I should be planting when spring arrives.
The way that I do this, is to write the names of the seeds in columns at the top and then the months down one side.
By doing things this way, I can see at a glance when the time is right - and I then have no excuse to be planting at the incorrect time.
Then I refer to my gardening diary to check what I did the previous year and what successes or failures I experienced.
Every garden has micro climates and we often have to admit defeat with certain crops in certain areas and adjust accordingly.
My method may sound like hard work for some people, but it really does help - and on days when the weather is bad, we can still be inside and do our gardening in a different manner.
