Having a vegetable garden is a wonderful thing especially when it comes to harvesting your home grown produce.
However, we often forget to let our children to share in this experience.
You may think that they would not be interested - that they would rather be playing games on their phones etc., and to a large extent you may be right, - but it is important that we teach them not to be disconnected from the real important things in life such as where their food actually comes from.
If you are growing potatoes, then let the boys have fun digging them up with their hands - have a competition as to who can find the most or the biggest.
Boys love getting their hands dirty and will have a great deal of fun doing this.
For the girls in the family, you can get them to harvest some leeks which can easily be pulled up out of the soil and they won't get their hands dirty doing this, - or get them to pick your beans or peas.
By just getting your children to spend an hour or so out in the garden in this manner is so good for them and an experience that they will always remember.
So many children are completely disconnected with nature which is so sad and I believe that many of them suffer from problems because of this.
By working in the garden and being in touch with nature is something we all need - it gets rid of our stresses, grounds us and is healthy for us too.
