This is something that I have always done and it really paid off when we had our terrible drought.
I have some of my favourite plants in containers which I have placed in the garden bed areas - such as an olive tree, rosemary bushes and others.
By doing this, the plant roots can grow out of the bottom of the container into the soil below - this allows the plant to carry on growing and not be constricted by the container as to what size it can reach.
It also allows feeding and watering without any waste.
Another advantage is that should you ever move, you can still take your plants with - simply cut through the roots beneath the pot and lift the pot out.
Containers placed in this way also look attractive as they give height and structure in the garden.
Even a large empty pot can be placed in a spot to create a feature - especially if it is an exceptionally attractive one.
