Having the freedom to take a drive up or down the coast when the beaches aren't crowded, is one of the benefits of being retired or in our case, semi-retired.
Running a BnB is the best as we're able to supplement our income with space we're not using on our property, but it is hard work and at times, a full-time job!
Having reliable staff is a necessity or else these old bones would not cope!
We can run away at least once a week, so took a drive up to Umdloti Beach on the North Coast of Kwazulu Natal with our good friends 
We took a stroll along the shoreline and as it was low tide, we saw barnacles and oysters on the weird rock formations as well as dead coral lying on the shoreline.
This beach has some really interesting rock formations as mentioned.

Two old school friends enjoyed the sights while chatting over old times.
Beyond that, to the south, is a looong sandy stretch of beach, where we enjoyed getting our feet wet, being splashed with a cool spray every so often, soaking up the sun, the cool sea breeze, and listening to the sound of the ocean.
Umdloti Beach is famed for supposedly having the safest natural tidal pool, for kiddies as well as old silvers! I however learned that it is only safe at low tide, but not so at any other time, due to the large rock formation which over time has carved two deep channels and with sudden strong riptides, bathers have been seriously injured by being tossed against the rocks, and others pulled into the ocean, so there sadly has been some drownings at this tidal pool when the lifeguards go off-duty.
I discovered this info while trying to determine what the old concrete pillars are that one sees along with natural rock formations.
On a high tide or during times of larger than normal swell, the surf constantly washes over these rocks that make up the back of the pool, filling it with water that then drains out through the two channels. This creates a permanent rip current so strong that quite often no human being would be capable of swimming against it.

The only thing I can think of is that these concrete pillars may have been built many moons ago for a kind of jetty?
We chose Cafe Java, just one of the many restaurants that overlook Umdloti South Beach, and were starving as well as very thirsty!
An ice-cold beer still is the best thirst quencher!
It was way past breakfast time, but one can order from the breakfast menu all day long, and this was the ladies' choice - Bacon & Brie Croissants served with a delicious homemade berry jam.
The gents both ordered Lamb Curry & Rice.
Of course being silvers, we weren't shy and asked for two extra plates, so we could have a taste of both options.
I cannot say which won the prize as both the croissants and the tender spicy lamb curry were equally delicious!
The perfect end to a long and winding walk!
