I'm writing this in the early morning hours, can't sleep.
Yesterday started off like most Saturdays. What followed turned everything upside down.
Early morning messages from my son are unheard of, so of course I immediately knew something was up. Added that they're two hours behind us.
I did not expect what followed. I don't check WhatsApp messages regularly. The meaningless good mornings, good nights, happy this or happy that, are becoming less. Likely because I don't return the favour.
It really is just a mindless habit. Yes, there are some cutesy ones, but they're mostly just...meaningless!
But, my son doesn't do that kind of thing. Pop-up on my phone mentioned his best friend. His mother has stage four cancer.
Life can be so harsh, so cruel, so darned unfair.
You'd expect to hear bad news about her, but that wasn't it.
He got news that his friend's younger brother died in a car crash. A super young man with a family. They moved in with the mother to help her through her last days.
Tragically he's the one to have been ripped away. Unfathomable!
The world is filled with problem people who are a burden to society. They live on the edge every day of their lives, but survive.
Why do things like this happen?
This family's lives were already turned upside down by the mother's illness, now this!
K lives and works in Johannesburg, a six-hour drive from here; his sister lives in Brazil. There's no other family.
His mother has been fighting for her life. What is going to happen now? I'm just having early morning lamentations; how is that family right now, how is the mother coping? I cannot imagine the depth of despair she must be feeling.
Sometimes life just sucks, really sucks!
