Do you regularly take a look at the ingredients of the food you’re buying? If not I can strongly recommend and promise, you will be shocked that sugar is part of nearly every product and in a lot of them it’s even one of the main ingredients.

Sugar applies to be unhealthy and that’s true at least for refined sugar. Consumed excessively it can cause adiposity, diabetes, depression and other health problems.

Do producers want to kill us all?

So, if sugar is that unhealthy why do producers put so much of it inside their products? The answer is quite simple. Sugar also makes addictive. Yes, you can see sugar as a drug and the companies are your dealers. They want to bind their customers to sell more of their products.

The tricks

Since people know about the bad image of sugar, companies are trying to hide it within the ingredients. Instead you can find in some places words like for example saccharose, dextrose, fructose and lactose. All of these are also refined sorts of sugar which aren’t healthier in any way.

Time for a change?

The German supermarket chain REWE last week started a campaign which goal it is to reduce sugar levels within their own brands. And it works like this:

They are selling different products in a pack with different exemplars. One of them is the known, old recipe. Then there’s a second inside with for example 20% less sugar, another one with 30% less sugar and fourth one with 40% less sugar.
You choose which one you prefer and vote for it on their website. The sort with most votes will go to mass production and will replace the old recipe.

What do you think about this campaign?

I think that it’s a step in the right direction to let customers choose what really is better tasting and how much sugar is enough. But I’m sceptic if this method will be also performed by other companies in the future as sugar with its addictive effect should be essential for a lot of products.
Maybe this is also just a good working kind of marketing campaign to suggest customers that companies are caring about our wishes.
