I came across clusters of red campion flowers while on a hike in the woods. The flowers are native to Europe but introduced to the Americas, where they took root. I read that you rarely see them in the wild, so I was a little mystified about why there were so many everywhere.
The whole trail was awash in colour with buttercups adding brilliant splashes of yellow to the scene.
They are biennial wildflowers that thrive on woodland edges where it's nice and shady, but more often than not, they are found on gardens.
The flowers are edible with medicinal properties, though this sounds more like folklore than science.
It is known as the "Fairy Flower" on the Isle of Man, where it is said to be a guardian of honey, among other legends.
I'm still wondering about these mystery flowers. There were so many of them in full bloom. What a spectacle!
