The world cup is creating some memorable sights in the city of Vancouver. Crowds clad in their countries colours are roaming the streets and fan sites scattered throughout the city. I decided to go to a fan fest during the Canada game with the intention of taking black and white photos for the #monomad challenge, but when I saw the sea of red, I had a new idea.
I figured it would be a shame to take out the national colours, which is one of the most interesting things about the different teams. Given that this was Canada's turn, there was a sea of red in the streets that are currently packed with fans from all over the world. I remembered that the editing software OM Workspace had a filter for partial colour effects in which a single colour is picked, and the rest are turned to grayscale. Although the photographs submitted in this set have the red colour, I thought that the Black and White community would be interested on the results of this exploration between colour and monochromatic effects.
I arrived early when the crowds were still sparse, so I was able to take a few shots without too many people around.

It is people what makes a festival interesting, and when the fans began to stream into the fest grounds, the red colour popped.
It was a hot sunny day, and the temperature kept rising as the afternoon went on. They had machines misting the crowds. I inadvertently walked under one of them and immediately felt a refreshing sensation. Mystified, I looked up and saw jets of mist blown into the air.
This gave me an idea. How about misting drones? Just imagine. You're at a festival, and it is hot, so you can rent your own misting drone to follow you around dropping a cool gentle mist on you. Far fetched? Well, no crazier than renting phone chargers from a vending machine at a festival.
In preparation for the world cup a massive amphitheater was created with magnificent wood. It is epic. I didn't realize that you had to line up to get into that area, and because I was messing around on other parts of the fan fest, I was too late to the party. A friendly staff told me that it was at capacity and that the chances I would get in there were "virtually zero."
The RCMP keeping the peace in style
There were different viewing areas with screens and stages of varying sizes. Music concerts rocked the grounds, including the sounds of rock and even mariachis later on. In addition, there were several smaller viewing zones for those who did not manage to get into the main viewing zone. You could sit on benches, chairs, grass, and just about anything with a reasonable flat surface. Plus there was also a plethora of things to see, do, eat, and drink.
The game was mad with a lot of goals and the crowd was mad and united in singing, chanting, and cheering (or jeering) on the team. What an electric atmosphere. Thousands of different people from all over the world gathered in one place to celebrate together for this one moment. That perhaps is the greatest world prize.
Thank you for visiting.
