I don't think, that one replaced the other, bodily teachings did not replace spiritual teachings, the two apparently always went hand in hand, each with overhangs to one side or the other in their time.

I agree. There is so much we don't know about "spirituality". I know that some people dismiss spirituality and mysticism outright, while others get so caught up in it that they can't accept alternate explanations for their spiritual experiences. I admit that I'm very mechanistic and science oriented in my approach to the subject, but maybe that's a good thing because there are so few of us out there trying to use the methods of science to understand the religious experience. Like the poet said, "For fools rush in where angels fear to tread"~ Alexander Pope.
