On April 14, 2018, IceBridge mission scientist John Sonntag was surprised with this high-profile aerial photography from the P-3 research plane while flying over the eastern Beaufort Sea where you can see three large holes in the ice.
The researcher is flabbergasted and does not remember ever having seen this. The purpose of the flight over this area was to make observations of sea ice in the area prior to 2013. The location of this picture took place about 50 miles northwest of Canada's Mackenzie River Delt.
