I’m a huge romantic, HUGE! I love romantic movies, romantic music, and atmosphere. Yet, for me, it’s very difficult to find romance in my everyday life. Okay, it’s even more difficult now with a kid but honestly, I don’t think that’s the main reason. The real reason is me. I’ve found that I have so high standards in this area that absolutely no one can reach those standards. I’m almost convinced that things that I find romantic exist only in movies, and movies also brought them to my imagination.
My husband, on the other hand, is not very romantic. No sir no mam. He is extremely practical and always listening to the voice of reason. The romantic part is a bit out of his comfort zone and probably if I demanded more of the romance, it would stress the shit out of him. I’d rather not. Besides, to beg for some romance is unromantic already. Don’t get me wrong, my husband is the most caring, gentle and loving person with the biggest heart. He buys me flowers sometimes, we go to the movies, have dinners in restaurants and travel. These activities, however, are nice, cozy and funny but not romantic. High standards, remember?
A funny story. When we went on our first date for a movie, we have already known each other for a couple of months. I was already very attracted to him and quite sure that he was attracted to me. However, I didn’t know if he was a romantic person or not and I didn’t set any expectations. He took my heart with a simple gesture. He knew that I’ve had a long day full of lectures from 8 am to 6 pm without a proper lunch time. He thought that I might be hungry. He made me sandwiches, juice, and an orange that he even peeled, sliced and packed in a Tupperware box for me. That was the perfect example of his thoughtful caring; I loved it. I fell in love with him as he is. After all, if he bought me flowers, I would remain hungry.
So, there is no movielike romance in my life. My life is busy, full of work and worries, sometimes with inconvenience and stress. Yet, I have love, comfort, beautiful family, happy and funny moments, good friends and a bright future. My life is life, not a movie. And I’m pretty damn happy with what I have.
Happy Valentine’s day everyone!
