It's another blissful weekend, and I'm excited to share my thoughts on this interesting topic from @galenkp as part of the weekend engagements for week 153.
I'm not going to lie, the question of what to do when you witness a co-worker stealing money from your shared workplace is a tricky one. On the one hand, you want to do the right thing and report the theft. On the other hand, you don't want to ruin your working relationship with your co-worker, be labeled a snitch, or even worse, get fired yourself. It's a delicate situation, but after much thought, I have come to the conclusion that staying silent is not an option.
Let me tell you a story. Back in 2016, I witnessed a similar situation at my friend's father's internet center. The person in charge of the place was obviously squandering the center's money, but my friend who was in the position to inform his father about the guy's actions brushed it off as something insignificant. Today, as I am writing this, the place is closed down. I'm not saying that it was solely because of the center attendant's actions, but it definitely contributed to the downfall of the business. This experience taught me that we should never underestimate the impact of theft, no matter how small it may seem.
So, what would I do if I found myself in a similar situation now? Firstly, I would confront the co-worker. I would ask them if they were aware that what they were doing was wrong and try to understand why they felt the need to steal. If they were apologetic and willing to make things right, I would give them a chance to do so. However, if they were defensive or dismissive, I would report the theft to our boss.
Reporting the theft is not an easy decision to make. It could lead to the co-worker losing their job and potentially hating me forever. But, I firmly believe that honesty is always the best policy. If we let these things slide, we are not only doing a disservice to our workplace but also enabling the co-worker to continue their unethical behavior.
It is clear that handling a theft by a co-worker is a difficult situation to navigate, I believe that is why galen suggested it :). A situation like this requires us to be honest, brave, and willing to face the consequences of our actions. But, staying silent is not an option. We owe it to ourselves, our workplace, and our co-workers to do the right thing.
