A friend asked the question, "What makes life worth living?"
Here's my quickly assembled answer:
Life is a heroic adventure; a search for deep meaning and redemptive purpose. It's full of ineffable delights, inexorable demands, and inoculating disappointments. There are an infinitely proliferating variety of things to love, to hate, to fear, to hope for, to fight for, to live for. There are comforts and consolations, amazing complexity and complication.
There are staggering beauties to behold and edifying truths to defend. We live at the height of the times, with tremendous freedom, unprecedented incredible wealth, and terrific opportunity. The world's wisdom is at our fingertips and a myriad of little communities of like souls are only a click away.
All these things, plus love. Love is still the key commodity and it seems to grow more prized and rarer every day in direct proportion to the growth of crippling pride and the resentments wrought by envy and jealousy. Those who know how to do love well, or perhaps more precisely; those who know how to accept, cherish, and nurture the God-given gift of love will find their love returned in abundance.
With a heart full of love, in a world ablaze with meaning, and a personal purpose to fulfill, life is a treat, a gift, a series of joys, made all the sweeter by sufferings and setbacks we must endure with grace and with faith that in the afterlife God will keep his promise that a life well-lived with love for Him and his creation, will be richly rewarded with a peace and happiness that is beyond human imagination.
