The term bokeh comes from the Japanese (暈け) and means as much as blurred. In photography, the term describes the quality of blurriness produced by a lens. Bokeh only becomes visible on the recording medium. It is not visible to the naked eye, or at least in a different form.
Der Begriff Bokeh stammt aus dem Japanischen (暈け) und bedeutet soviel wie unscharf, verschwommen. In der Fotografie beschreibt der Begriff die Qualität der Unschärfe, die ein Objektiv erzeugt. Bokeh wird erst auf dem Aufnahmemedium sichtbar. Mit bloßem Auge ist das nicht, oder zumindest in anderer Form, zu sehen.
Points of light in the out-of-focus area of the lens take the shape of the aperture or possibly the entrance pupil of the lens. With most lenses, the light points of the bokeh then have an octagonal shape because most apertures consist of 8 aperture blades.
Die Lichtpunkte im unscharfen Bereich des Objektivs nehmen die Form der Blende oder eventuell der Eintrittspupille des Objektivs an. Bei den meisten Objektiven haben die Lichtpunkte des Bokehs dann eine achteckige Form, da die meisten Blenden aus 8 Blendenlamellen bestehen.
"Better" lenses, especially those that are older, usually have more aperture blades (10 to 16). At some point you no longer see edges, the bokeh becomes round or bubble-like. The lenses from Meyer Optik Görlitz are known for their unique bubbles.
"Bessere" Objektive, vor allem welche die älter sind, haben meist mehr Blendenlamellen (10 bis 16). Irgendwann sieht man keine Kanten mehr, das Bokeh wird rund oder blasenartig. Die Ojektive von Meyer Optik Görlitz sind für ihre einzigartigen Blasen bekannt.
But there's more. The most "brutal" bokeh is conjured up on the sensor by my modified Helios 44/2. I reversed both the front and the rear lens on my specimen. That's quite easy with this old lens from the Soviet Union. Both lenses are held by a threaded ring. Unscrew the ring, turn the lens around, screw the ring back in and the mod is finished.
Aber da geht noch mehr. Das "brutalste" Bokeh zaubert mein modifiziertes Helios 44/2 auf den Sensor. Ich habe bei meinem Exemplar sowohl die Front, als auch die Rücklinse umgedreht. Das ist bei diesem alten Objektiv aus der Sowjetunion recht einfach. Beide Linsen werden jeweils von einem Gewindering gehalten. Ring raus drehen, Linse umdrehen, Ring wieder rein drehen und fertig ist der Mod.
However, doing light paintings exclusively with bokeh quickly becomes boring. But in combination with other techniques and motifs, I think you can use it more often.
Light Paintings ausschließlich mit Bokeh zu machen wird allerdings schnell langweilig. Aber in Verbindung mit anderen Techniken und Motiven kann man das durchaus häufiger einsetzen wie ich finde.
The Industar 61 L/Z has conjured up this unique star-shaped bokeh on the sensor of the Nikon D750. The aperture has exactly this star shape at f5.6. Crazy, isn't it? The Industar is also a Soviet lens from the 1980s. Unlike the very widely used Helios 44/2, however, this one is not so easy to get.
Dieses einzigartige Bokeh in Sternform hat das Industar 61 L/Z auf den Sensor der Nikon D750 gezaubert. Die Blende hat bei f5,6 genau diese Sternform. Verrückt, oder? Das Industar ist ebenfalls ein sowjetisches Objektiv aus den 1980er Jahren. Im Gegensatz zum sehr weit verbreiteten Helios 44/2 ist dieses allerdings nicht so einfach zu bekommen.
I took the Voigtländer Lanthar 2.8/50 off an old compact camera. This lens has only 4 aperture blades. I wonder what the bokeh will look like then? Exactly, square. The adaptation to the Nikon was not quite so easy. I designed an adapter in the CAD programme and printed it out on the 3D printer. Unfortunately, there was no space for a correction lens. That's why the lens can no longer be focused to infinity on the Nikon. But that doesn't matter. I only adapted the thing to capture square bokeh. I then shoot the rest of the scene with another lens.

Ich hab das Ding ausschließlich adpatiert um quadratisches Bokeh aufzunehmen. Den Rest der Szene nehme ich dann mit einem anderen Objektiv auf.

Light painting is a unique form of art. The artist illuminates the scene with diverse light sources and paints light traces into the picture with various light tools. In addition, we use various other techniques, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited.
All our pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, our pictures are not processed on the computer.
