Waking up in an unfamiliar land with no friends, money, and nobody to turn to would probably be scary and bewildering initially. However I feel I could fit in and become a contributing member of the society within 3-6 months, using my skills, determination and learnability.
The first few days would undoubtedly be the toughest. My immediate priorities would be to find food, water and shelter. Without any currency to exchange, I would volunteer to do anything that required assistance, cleaning, organizing, cooking, etc., in return for basic necessities, showing a strong work ethic and respectability to gain people's trust.
One of my advantages would be communication. Even if the language were completely alien to me I would endeavor to learn basic greetings and phrases; knowing the language would be vital for building relationships, understanding social norms, and discovering opportunities. With consistent, daily practice, I believe fluent communication would be attainable in a matter of months.
I could also make use of my knowledge to gain an income. If internet was available I could be taking advantage of online job opportunities; writing, virtual assistance, data entry or online research. In the absence of technology I could work in manual labor, as a tutor or in a local business, until I acquired financial independence.
Adaptability would also be a crucial component of my strategy. Any given place would have unique rules, cultures and traditions. Instead of resisting these nuances, I would try to embrace and understand them; relationships built on mutual respect would make me learn considerably faster.
By one month, I would hope to have found a temporary job and have grasped the basics of the local society. Within three months, a job I was confident with, comfortable housing and a social network, however small, would be a priority. By six months, I feel I would have the capacity to be a self-sustaining, integrated individual contributing to the community, feeling like it were home.
Despite the inevitable difficulties of being a castaway, this scenario presents a fantastic opportunity for personal growth. My skills and attitude would be invaluable, enabling me to persevere through the initial struggles and succeed in a new, strange, land.
