There are a lot of things that I can do at home by myself without a handyman. For me, doing home chores are not just to save money but also to learn how to be more independent.
Some work I could do myself include: keeping my room tidy, washing my dishes, doing my laundry, tidying around the house, vacuuming, putting things back where they belong, sweeping the yard, hanging up the washing. These are small things but I always feel happy when I look around and everything is clean and tidy as I've done it myself.
I also love to cook. Rather than going out to buy food every single day I am able to make my own simple meals with what I have in my home. Cooking at home allows me to save some money and I am free to make food how I want it to be made. It is sometimes hard after a full day of work to cook something, but I do believe there is a certain charm to the fact that I am the one eating it.
I am also capable of doing laundry and tidying up my things without assistance. If there is an easy-to-follow process, I always do my best to learn it on my own through instructions or tutorials.
I also realize that there are many things that are best done by a professional. For instance, tasks like electrical, large plumbing repairs or difficult maintenance jobs, require specific training and experience. I think independence is not doing everything all by yourself, but knowing when it is okay to ask for help.
Am I going to still do these things myself? Oh yes! I want to learn how to do more physical things to save myself money as I am not very crafty. Also, there are times when I need to outsource to save time or to get the job done properly.
For me doing it myself is worth it for the money saving alone. It's taught me patience, discipline and confidence. Every small victory I have when doing it myself, I remind myself that I can learn and I can grow.
The simplest tasks we can do at home bring us the greatest joy. As long as I can do something easily and safely, I will keep on enjoying the experience of doing things on my own.
