I think that one thing I have learned in life is that power sometimes exposes a person's true character. We might think of someone as a kind and humble person when they have nothing, but then they are given power and they are rude to others. For me, the most clear abuse of power is when someone exerts their power over someone else to make them feel inferior and to give in to the person in power.

I've observed folks in power seem to be of the mentality that they can do whatever they please simply because there are those who rely on them to do what they do. They demand respect, but give none. They even use their authority to intimidate anyone that dare oppose. What make this so painful is that the victims' folks opt to just take it because they're scared.

I think, for me, having power is not a licence to act against other people's human rights. Regardless of whether we are leaders, bosses, parents or just the average member of society, it is always right for us to think about how we are impacting on other people. Despite our varying roles in society, we all deserve to be treated with dignity.

I also realize that standing up is not always easy. There are times we choose to stay quiet to avoid conflict and keep our peace of mind. But there are times when our silence enables a situation of injustice. We must learn when, how, and where to speak up, and if someone is abusing his or her power.

I think accountability starts with honesty and courage. We shouldn't excuse wrongs in that someone is our buddy, kin, or even admired. We have to learn to take a stand even if it is uncomfortable, while at the same time we need to ensure accusations are dealt with in the spirit of fairness, truth, investigation, and evidence.

We can start, first and foremost, by taking a look inward. We don't need to be in a high position to use the position we are in to cause harm.

Power, to me, is not having people intimidated by us. Power to me is being able to use our control to help others and build them up. A good leader should not have to destroy people to demonstrate that he/she is in charge.

Power is a privilege, not an excuse to hurt others. When we opt for humility, justice and accountability, we move one step closer to a world in which people feel safe and valued.
