Examinations and tests are often seen as crucial markers of knowledge and intelligence Students dedicate years to learning how to prepare for them because exam scores can have an impact on test-takers' grades, scholarships, places at university and ultimately their professional lives. But an exam does not fully determine an individual's overall intelligence, usually it only assesses his or her ability to recall information.
One of the reasons that exams are seen as indications of intelligence, then, is that they reflect your capacity for inputting and utilizing information. Good questions are open-ended, forcing students to break down problems, find links, articulate concepts, and think logically. For example, an exam in mathematics may not simply test knowing formulas and using them, but may instead have the question of figuring out which formula to use and applying it to an unknown problem.
There is still too much reliance on rote learning in many tests; students can recall definitions, dates, formulas, facts, which may last long enough to pass the examination and forget a lot of them afterwards. There is a distinction between learning something for the short term, for an exam, and knowing how to apply that knowledge in the real world, though. A person can do badly at written tests yet be very creatively, communicatively, practically, and problem-solving talented.
There are lots of reasons why exams are still relevant. They allow teachers to more accurately assess the students' progress and the extent to which specific learning objectives have been met. However, exams should be viewed as a form of evidence which complements other methods of assessment. Written assignments, performance, practical work, research, group work and the use of skills in everyday life can all be valid forms of evidence.
In the end, exams are a good judge but not the definitive judge of intelligence. They measure specific types of knowledge, competence, reasoning, and memory if formatted correctly. What constitutes real intelligence, however, goes beyond being able to regurgitate facts in a limited amount of time.
The aim of our educational system should not be merely to prepare students for exams, but to prepare them to think for themselves, to solve problems, to communicate their ideas, and to put what they've learned to practical use.
Knowledge is of no use unless people can make good use of it.
