The question is now regularly being asked, "is it moral to bring a child into today's world?" With current problems such as war, climate change, financial instability and division, many people wonder if it is right to even bring a child into this modern day and age. While these worries are understandable, my belief is that the choice of bearing children is a personal matter, and can still be done ethically if parents raise them with adequate love, care and guidance.
One argument for people choosing not to bear children is that the next generation will be burdened by problems they are unable to fix. Climate change will effect natural resources, with more frequent disasters and lack of food due to shortages. Wars are a constant threat in parts of the world; causing suffering and problems for communities.
Finances are a major issue in raising children; an inability to afford basics will create more problems.
It is argued by some that due to an already populated planet, giving birth will simply use up more resources. Taking a decision not to bring a child into the world seems from this point of view to be the rational choice.
However historically there is also a strong case for bearing children. Throughout the human race, there have always been severe crises that have tested everyone, wars for example, epidemics and financial crises. These have somehow been survived and humanity has moved forwards due to people's choice to reproduce, raise children well and try and improve things. Children raised with moral values, empathy, compassion and responsibility can and could be the future, problem solving generation, using skills such as innovation, leadership and love to bring society forward.
Therefore the choice is not "should we have children?" but are we willing to raise them right? It takes responsibility and effort to raise a child in a caring manner and requires emotion and finances to be considered as well as these other problems. If a child has not been considered responsibly, it may be unethical to bring one into the world no matter what problems there are or aren't.
Finally, as I said earlier there is no definite answer to this question and both have to be looked at from the other side. The argument should not be " is it okay to bring children into the world," but "are we ready to help bring a better world for children?" Ethical childbearing has to involve raising an individual well to face today's problems, not raising one into an ideal world.
