When the land expansion will be fully released, battles in Splinterlands will work in two phases:
Item and spell cards are not sold by Splinterlands but instead produced on specific buildings by the operators of land (owners or renters). The producers of items and spells will be able to sell, rent or use them themselves.
Right now, there isn't a clear distinction between item and spell cards in their description and they are treated as a whole. As more details become available, the distinction will probably be made.
