I wish we were like good liquor,
or those wines from prestigious wineries,
the more years the better,
This is not our condition,
The years go by and the wrinkles remain,
I wish it weren't like that,
I am looking askance at old age,
learning to fear the years,
to inevitable decay,
to the predicted abandonment,
to that chronic agony announced,
the boring trite story,
that repeats itself over and over again,
the tale of a thousand and one gray hairs,
Getting old is a Chinese torture,
a slow poisoning,
It's that wall that encloses you
with its bricks of years,
Don't tell me the story,
life while you can,
don't wait for tomorrow,
because we are not an aged rum.
TEXTO EN ESPAÑOL
Ojalá fuéramos como el buen licor,
o esos vinos de bodegas prestigiosas,
mientras más años mejor,
no es así nuestra condición,
los años pasan y las arrugas quedan,
quisiera que no fuera así,
estoy mirando con recelo la vejez,
aprendiendo a temerle a los años,
a la decadencia inevitable,
al abandono pronosticado,
a esa agonía crónica anunciada,
la aburrida historia trillada,
que se repite una y otra vez,
el cuento de las mil y una canas,
envejecer es una tortura china,
un envenenamiento lento,
es esa pared que te encierra
con sus ladrillos de años,
que no me vengan con el cuento,
vive mientras puedas,
no esperes el mañana,
porque no somos un ron añejo.
