Rengginang or Rangginang, is a legendary snack. People from Sunda, Betawi, Java, and some parts of Sumatra are very familiar with rengginang.
Rengginang is made from gloutinous rice, or sticky rice. It is cooked with some spices , sun-dried and deep-fried. It is very tasty and crispy snack.
You can find renginang in every house in every family in Iedul Fitri. Iedul Fitri is the Islamic celebration that is held once a year after the fasting month. In the celebration, mostly young people will visit their older relatives. The hosts will serve various snacks to welcome the guests. Rengginang is always on the table. That is why I called it " legendary snack".
This is a picture of dried renginang before it is fried and after it is fried. It expands to be twice as large as the raw one.
Rengginang should be deep fried on medium heat to get the maximum expansion.
I have never made rengginang by myself, but some people say that making rengginang is not easy. Some people fail. The fried rengginang does not expand maximally or bantat.
A kilo of fried rengginang is around 60,000 IDR or $4-$5. A kilo of non-fried rengginang is around 40,000 IDR or $3-$4. The price change depends on the raw material. When the price of gloutinous rice increases , the price of fried or non-fried rengginang will increase too.
Last year in Iedul fitri my wife sold rengginang. She did not make it by herself, but she bought a home made rengginang near my house.
I asked myself when my wife fried rengginang yesterday. Is this snack also available in Asean countries? If there is, can you tell me what the name of this snack is? Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy it.
