This will be just a short post on the small town of Oberammergau Germany, another village in Bavaria with a particularly difficult name to read and pronounce.
The town was very similar to others that I have posted about recently so I don't have a whole lot to say about it, but it was our last stop in the region and I feel compelled to add another pin to my Pinmapple map, so you're getting a post even though it may be repetitive at this point.
The town is surrounded by mountains and known for its hiking, but we got there late in the afternoon so we didn't do any of that. We mainly just wandered the streets to check out the painted buildings.
The one in the photo above and below was particularly elaborate and interesting.
I really liked the painted pillars and the 3D effect around all the windows.
Each window frame is nearly identical, which really makes me wonder if they were painted free-hand or with a stencil.
The paintings around the windows of the different buildings appear very similar when viewed from afar but they are actually all very different when viewed up close.
I wonder if the artist was given free reign to paint them however he wished or if it the person got to see a draft drawing prior and had a say in the style? Maybe there was a catalogue or sketch book that the artist allowed their clients to choose from? 🤔
I bet there were people back then that were like:
"He wants how much to paint the windows!?! For that price I'll just do it myself."
I would have been one of those people.
Then the wife would try to convince her husband to just let the professional do his job, but of course the man would insist on doing it himself. Then he would spend almost the same amount of money on supplies and the finished product would look like crap and he would have to hire the artist to do the job over.
The wife would say "I told you so" and the husband would go to the pub in town and drink with his buddies and try to re-gain his sense of self worth.
These are the fun little stories I create in my head over such mundane things 😆.
Kathe Wohlfahrt is a famous Christmas store chain in Germany that we love. They sell everything Christmas and are located all over the country and around Europe. We can't not go in when we see one and almost always buy something. The store isn't cheap though so it's better if we don't see one.
One exciting thing we did that day was buy new hats! Here is my wife tackling a large beer while wearing her new purchase.
There's no better feeling than the one you get while wearing a nice hat.
I'v only worn mine once for a walk close to our home. I call it my hiking hat, though I haven't gotten a chance to wear it hiking yet. Hopefully I will get good use out of it next spring and summer.
