Sinking T-Posts with a Post Driver

Liz Crain of Leafhopper Farm demonstrates how she sinks T-Posts into the ground using a Post Driver. These are primarily used for fencing, but here on the farm we use them to tether the goats as well.

HOW TO USE A POST DRIVER

• Once you have the T-Post placed in the area you'd like it to sink into the ground, tilt it forward to make it easier to place the Post Driver over the top of it, and then bring it back up to vertical. Lift the Post Driver up a little ways and then quickly bring it down in a repeated pounding motion.

SAFETY TIPS

• The Post Driver is a very heavy piece of metal, so be careful when moving it around, especially above your head. When the Post Driver hits the top of the T-Posts because it is high impact metal-on-metal impact, so be sure you are using hearing protection of some kind as it is very loud and occurs repeatedly. It is also best to wear gloves and keep a loose grip as you bring the driver down on top of the post to reduce the impact on your hands and joints.

HITTING ROCKS

• Sometimes you will hit hidden rocks in the ground. You can tell when this has happened because the T-Post stops sinking further into the ground, and there is a grinding feeling when you tilt the post back and forth. Some rocks can be pretty large, so it may be best to move it more than a few inches away from where you were.

WHEN YOU'RE DONE

• You will know when you've gone far enough down because the spade at the bottom which stabilizes the post will be completely in the ground. Placing your foot on the top of this spade can help you tell how far yoiu have to go without having to stop the pounding to check it visually.
