Liz Crain of Leafhopper Farm describes how to pick and harvest the apples from your Apple Trees in order to minimize bruising to the apple and damage to the tree.
Harvesting Apples
Shaking a branch which contains ripe Apples will cause the ones which are ready to harvest to fall to the ground. Avoid this strategy if you are selling your apples and are concerned about potential cosmetic damage and bruising to the apple resulting from the impact with the ground. Alternatively you can put a soft blanket down to minimize the damage.
If you are selling your apples, it is probably best to pick them by hand to avoid damage. This is done by grasping the apple in your hand and twisting it until it released from the branch. This avoid damage to the tree such as removal of leaves or the buds for next year's apples.
Apple Tree Varieties
There are many different varieties of apple trees. It's important to do your research before starting an orchard because it will affect things such as harvest times and things that the apples can be used for.
Some varieties blossom earlier or later in the year, and this can be important information if you're concerned about frost timing or if you want to extend your harvest by having different varieties which ripen at different times of the year in your orchard.
Supermarket apples are mostly bred to avoid bruising which leads to thicker skins and less flavor. The amount of sugar in the apple determines its sweetness, but it also increases how easily the apple will bruise.
